Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about LttR
What are inmate pen pals?
Inmate pen pals are incarcerated individuals who exchange letters with people outside of prison. Through prison pen pal programs like LttR, inmates can connect with correspondents who provide friendship, support, and connection to the outside world. Writing to inmates helps reduce recidivism and provides crucial emotional support during incarceration.
How do I find an inmate pen pal?
Finding an inmate pen pal is easy with LttR. Browse human-reviewed profiles of inmates seeking correspondence, filter by gender, location, or interests, and choose someone whose story resonates with you. Each profile includes a facility mailing address so you can write them directly. Browsing is free and does not require an account.
What's the difference between jail pen pals and prison pen pals?
Jail pen pals are individuals in county or local jails, typically awaiting trial or serving short sentences (under 1 year). Prison pen pals are convicted individuals serving longer sentences in state or federal prisons. Most pen-pal platforms, including LttR, focus on prison pen pals as they have longer stays and benefit more from outside connections.
How do I write a prisoner for the first time?
To write a prisoner, start with a friendly introduction including your name and why you're reaching out. Share a bit about yourself and your interests. Ask open-ended questions about their hobbies, goals, or daily life. Include your return address so they can write back. Be respectful, avoid asking about their crime initially, and send your letter to the complete facility address shown on their profile.
Where can I meet an inmate online?
You can meet an inmate by browsing human-reviewed pen-pal profiles on LttR. You cannot physically meet someone through the site. Read a profile, copy the facility mailing address, and send a letter yourself. LttR does not print, forward, or mail letters.
What is LttR?
LttR (Letters) is a platform that connects people with incarcerated individuals seeking pen-pal relationships. We provide a safe and respectful way to establish meaningful correspondence with people who need connection and support during their incarceration.
How does LttR work?
Browse profiles of incarcerated individuals, read their stories, and choose someone you'd like to write to. Each profile includes their mailing address, background information, and interests. You can then send them a letter via traditional mail to begin a pen-pal relationship.
How much does it cost to list a profile?
A Standard listing offers clear access and payment terms before you pay. This keeps the profile live with an unlimited bio, a photo gallery, and full search visibility. Payments are processed through Commas with a debit or credit card, and a profile stays in draft until it's paid. See plans and prices on the pricing page.
What is the Featured upgrade?
Featured listing payment terms are shown before you pay by card through Commas. When you choose an automatically renewing offer, the charge repeats every 90, 180 or 365 days until canceled, not by calendar month. Featured is built to get a profile seen and pull in real responses:
- Active promotion across our social networks — the profiles we feature reach thousands of people
- Top-of-search and state-page placement
- Gold "Premium" badge and priority review
- Everything in the Standard listing, included
Who can have a profile on LttR?
Profiles are only for individuals currently incarcerated in the United States. Listings must use legal names. A person reviews each submission before it goes live. That review does not independently check the details, and it is not a background check.
What if payment fails or is cancelled?
Existing prepaid purchases do not renew automatically and are never converted into subscriptions. When prepaid time runs out, the listing stays up for 3 more days, then it is paused. Nothing is deleted, and paying again brings it back. For a recurring offer, you must explicitly agree to the total price every 90, 180 or 365 days. Cancel automatic renewal in My Account; access remains through the time already paid. Subscription payment failures have a 14-day grace period. A previous one-time renew link remains one-time and does not opt you into recurring billing. You can use any debit or credit card. Charges show up as Commas.
How many photos can be included in a profile?
Each profile can include up to 5 photos. Photos must not contain profanity, sexually explicit content, children, other people, or advertisements for other websites. All photos are reviewed before the profile goes live.
Can inmates send and receive emails?
The ability to send electronic messages depends on each individual prison's available services. If electronic messaging is supported for a particular inmate, this will be noted on their profile with instructions. Most communication occurs through traditional postal mail.
How do I write to someone?
Each profile includes the inmate's mailing address. Simply send a letter to the address provided. Make sure to include:
- The inmate's full legal name
- Their inmate ID number
- The complete prison mailing address
- Your return address
Allow 1-2 weeks for delivery and response time.
Is it safe to write to someone in prison?
We encourage users to exercise common sense and caution when corresponding with anyone online or through mail. Never share sensitive personal information like financial details, social security numbers, or passwords. Use a P.O. Box if you're concerned about sharing your home address.
What information is required for a profile?
Required information includes:
- Full legal name and photo(s)
- Gender and birthdate
- Inmate ID and prison name
- Complete mailing address
- Bio and interests
Optional information includes crime/offense details, release dates, and electronic contact options.
Can profiles be edited or updated?
Yes, profile owners can edit their profiles at any time through their account dashboard. However, any changes must be re-approved by our admin team before going live. This ensures all information remains accurate and appropriate.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account dashboard. Click the profile you wish to cancel, then select the cancel subscription option. Your profile will remain active until the end of your billing period, after which it will be removed.
What happens when someone is released?
Profile owners should tell LttR when someone is released or transfers, and pause or remove the listing. Report an outdated listing to support@erosmedia.ai so it can be reviewed. LttR does not independently check custody status.
Can I send money or gifts?
Most prisons have specific procedures for sending money through commissary accounts. Check the individual's profile for commissary/care package site links if available. Never send cash or personal checks through the mail. Always use official prison channels for monetary contributions.
How do I report inappropriate content?
If you encounter a profile with inappropriate content, please contact us immediately. All profiles are reviewed before publication, but if something concerning slips through, we want to know. We take content moderation seriously and will investigate all reports promptly.
