Privacy Policy

Introduction

LttR ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our platform. Please read this privacy policy carefully. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not access the site.

Information We Collect

Profile Information

When submitting a profile, we collect information including but not limited to: name, photos, gender, date of birth, inmate ID, prison name, mailing address, biographical information, interests, crime/offense information, release dates, and contact preferences. This information is made publicly available on our platform to facilitate pen-pal connections.

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address, password (encrypted), and account preferences. This information is used for authentication and account management purposes.

Payment Information

Payments are handled securely through Commas. Some earlier listings were billed through PayPal or Stripe, which LttR no longer uses for payments. We store subscription status and transaction IDs but do not store credit card numbers or sensitive financial information.

Usage Data

We use Google Analytics only after you choose to accept optional analytics. It helps us understand broad page usage and conversion steps. Our analytics events do not include profile names, DOC or inmate numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, biographies, messages, or search terms. Dynamic page addresses are reduced to route categories, such as a profile or blog article, instead of sending their identifiers. Query strings and campaign names are removed. We retain only controlled acquisition categories such as ChatGPT, Google, Bing, Perplexity, social, email, direct, or other. If you decline or enable your browser's Do Not Track setting, Google Analytics is not loaded by LttR.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Operate and maintain the LttR platform
  • Process profile submissions and display them publicly
  • Process subscription payments and manage billing
  • Communicate with you about your account and subscriptions
  • Moderate content and enforce our terms of service
  • Improve our services and develop new features
  • Comply with legal obligations
  • Protect against fraud and unauthorized access

Public Information

Important: All profile information submitted to LttR is made publicly available to site visitors. This includes names, photos, biographical information, and mailing addresses. This public sharing is the core function of our service - to connect incarcerated individuals with potential pen-pals.

If you do not want this information to be public, do not submit a profile to our platform.

Information Sharing and Disclosure

We may share your information with:

  • Service Providers: Third-party companies that help us operate our platform (e.g., Commas for payment processing, hosting providers)
  • Legal Requirements: When required by law, court order, or legal process
  • Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets
  • Protection of Rights: To protect our rights, privacy, safety, or property, and that of our users

We do not sell your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

Data Security

We use administrative, technical, and physical security measures to protect your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

We strongly encourage users to exercise caution when sharing personal information with individuals they meet through our platform. Use a P.O. Box if you prefer not to share your home address.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

  • Access and update your account information at any time
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Cancel your subscription at any time
  • Opt out of promotional communications
  • Request a copy of your data

Note that deleting your account will remove your profile from public view but some information may be retained for legal compliance and record-keeping purposes.

Children's Privacy

Our service is not intended for individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us immediately.

Cookies and Tracking

Essential browser storage supports features such as sign-in and your analytics preference. Optional Google Analytics may use cookies only after you accept it. Before acceptance, LttR does not configure, disable, or otherwise alter a Google tag that another service may have installed. You can decline optional analytics without losing access to the site. Declining or revoking immediately stops LttR analytics events, activates Google's disable flag only for the configured LttR property, sends a denied consent update when that configured library is available, removes our analytics loader, and attempts to expire only its measurement-specific _ga_DBNHQ3J4C8 cookie. It does not remove the shared _ga cookie or cookies for other properties.

The versioned local preference is backed by a minimal first-party lttr_analytics_deny_v1=1 cookie when you decline or revoke. It contains no personal information, uses SameSite=Lax, and is marked Secure on HTTPS. This denial takes priority if browser storage still contains an older acceptance, and is removed only after a later acceptance is successfully saved. Analytics choices are synchronized across open LttR tabs. Browser or cookie restrictions can prevent cleanup, so these controls fail closed and stop LttR from sending further events even when cleanup is blocked.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
